Cocktail Menu №3: Apocalypse Edition

Flickering Under-Cover Flashlight
The book you wish you were
reading is right here. What’s
one more sip? A little taste
of knowing never hurt anybody.

The Gunk Stops Here
Blue-green the sea always was,
until we crossed it. Against
all odds, your little life dares
to span this chasm, as if
you could ever cut the anchor.

Vesuvius All Over Again
We always thought the path
was clear, the destined empire,
but the poison was in our cups
the whole time. Thirst
is a distracting cause of death.

The Greenest Thumb on Earth
After all of it, you’ll finally become
someone — if you can remember
what grass tasted like, the blades
oddly sticky to the tongue. If
you can just tell how things were.

Thanks for reading! April is National Poetry Writing Month, and this year I’m writing and publishing a poem each day titled after (and sort of, sometimes, about) a cocktail. My 2019–2023 NaPoWriMo poems (about crossword clues, food, GIFs, the Fast and Furious movies, and car insurance) are here on Medium, so check out my profile if you want more.
