NaPoWriMo 2020, Day Ten: “Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

He seemed always
inevitable, a force

of perfect violence
from the moment

he strides out
of the C-130.

His mad bulk
is utterly alien,

something new
even in this world

of men run amok.
But there is honor

too in Luke Hobbs,
and the blind kind

of redemption
that these movies

trade in, and soon
he is almost family,

except for the same
old petty conflicts

between actors,
the even exchange

of punches, the need
to forever win, or

at least to endlessly
not lose.

April is National Poetry Writing Month, and this year I’m writing and publishing a poem a day inspired by the Fast and Furious movies. Last year’s poems (about car insurance) are still live on Medium, so check out my profile if you want more. My 2018 Twilight Zone NaPoWriMo poems are online here.
