NaPoWriMo, Day Nineteen: “Fancy Free”

Fancy Free

You wake up and drive
to Kentucky, Taylor Swift
blaring as the zoetrope
highway scrolls past.
You drink too much
coffee, find a park
in a secret place, water
pouring out of the earth
as blue as the waves
in Cancun or Amalfi.
You try not to feel lost
sometimes in the maze
of experiences flooding
you. You take pictures
of flowers and trees,
feel happy for a moment
when you can identify
the budding honeysuckle
near the artesian well,
a rare case of your ability
to hold onto something.
But at least, sometimes,
the flood is beautiful
as it carries you off.

Thanks for reading! April is National Poetry Writing Month, and this year I’m writing and publishing a poem each day titled after (and sort of, sometimes, about) a cocktail. My 2019–2023 NaPoWriMo poems (about crossword clues, food, GIFs, the Fast and Furious movies, and car insurance) are here on Medium, so check out my profile if you want more.
