Hot Dog

You bite into the casing,
hear the snap, and taste
as always the salt, the flood
of bounce of unknown meat
and a bun, a little stale,
anointed with condiment
offerings, and you ask
as always what this thing
even is, this small precious
ark of American flavor

Thanks for reading! April is National Poetry Writing Month, and this year I’m writing and publishing a poem about food each day. My 2021, 2020, and 2019 NaPoWriMo poems (about GIFs, the Fast and Furious movies, and car insurance, respectively) are still live on Medium, so check out my profile if you want more.

Cheese

It’s obviously
overindulgent,
an unhealthy joy
that we’re not
built to consume,
but yet it’s so
spectacular,
the rich salt of it
and round burst
of flavor, varieties
enough to study
for a lifetime,
names of places
now famous,
Cotswold, Gouda,
the Appenine
hills of Parma.

Coffee Haiku

Spinning wheel, black dawn
of morning, be mine & mine,
perfect cup of light.

Dishes

I don’t know why
it’s so difficult
to just do the chore
each day: a few
minutes of work
for a clean sink,
gleaming utensils.
It feels wasteful
somehow, I think,
to exert this effort
for only myself,
my one or two
forks. Of course
I’m rationalizing,
like I so often do
to justify my life,
my little piles
of semi-organized
unwashed chaos.

Fast Food

Truthfully
it tastes good,
salt and MSG

the unrivaled
marks of flavor
blossoming

on the tongue.
It’s beautiful
how well

the drive-thru
feeds hunger
with nothing,

enticement
and promises
you know

are an act
of magic
you fall for

every time.

Pizza Tanka

Dough disc, crimson field
and warm bed of cheese stretching,
a topography

I wander seeking comfort,
carbohydrate paradise.

Guy Fieri

Oh patron saint
of Flavortown,
we thank you
for your goatee,
your trash can
nachos and bold
spice. Shape us
in your image
to love the food
that is broad
and powerful.
May our tips
be frosted, plates
large and full.
Teach us to fry
everything, pour
multiplied sauces
upon our chicken.
Save our palates
from nuance
and show us dishes
from many diners,
drive-ins, and dives
forever and ever.
